I think this song is about someone distancing themselves from their friends/family. Maybe because of hyper independence, they believe that people shouldn’t have to put their time and energy into them, which is why, when their friends do put that energy into them, they think something must be wrong. The person expects, and is almost proud of, people treating them like they don’t need much, if anything. I think that’s why the song uses “just add water”. A lot of things are marketed as easy to use and have when all you have to do is “add water”. When the person realizes that the people they care for want to do more than that, it scares them. “Leave without me because I don’t want to go” I think that references how they’ve been left alone in the past, and now don’t know how to be with other people. “I’ll sleep until it’s over” is another way of showing how easy it is to be with the person. Despite all of this, they still crave the affection finally being given to them. “And when I wake up, greet me with a hug, A body warm and loving. Show me I’m not disgusting” that tells how, usually, when people become hyper independent, it’s because, in the past, someone convinced them they weren’t deserving of care, or that they were disgusting. Towards the end, the song says “I’ll turn the lights off when I go. Pay my bills and fold my clothes. Take care of my family and my home” I think this is the person finally making themselves leave their friends, either by suicide, or by cutting them off. They mention paying the bills, folding the clothes, making sure that it’s like they were never there at al, like they never took up space to begin with, that they never needed that affection. When it says “Take care of my family and my home” I think that’s another way of the person saying that they don’t need the affection, even though they do, and thinking that they must have done something wring for their friends to give it to them, they feel like they’re being a burden, so they leave, believing it to be better for those they care about, so they don’t feel like they have to take care of the person anymore. After all, why would they, when it would be so easy to “just add water” and ignore the person?
