I personally think this song is similar to a story in the bible. There was a city called jarecho where all the sinners lived. There was a man and his wife who were not sinners. An angel came and told them he would destroy the city and the had to RUN. And he said to not look back or else they would tun into sand, sadly his wife couldn't resist and died. It makes total spence to the lyrics saying, "This time I'm ready to run." (The couple had many opportunities to leave jarecho, but didn't) "Escape from the city, and follow the sun." The sun to us moves forward, also meaning not to look back. "I don't want to be left in the dark of the night" They're basically saying they want to leave so they're not left in the dark with everyone else. So my theory cones to an end, I think it ties exactly to the bible story and that was 1d's intention.
